The Wobble That Points at Space

A leaning top refuses the floor and walks in a circle. The same wobble spins inside your hand.

The gym smelled like floor wax and old balloons. Everyone had gone home. Maya and Soren had the packing-up job because they were the last two who cared, which was how they ended up alone with a table of tops and one heavy brass gyroscope somebody had labeled DO NOT DROP.

"Watch this one," Maya said. She spun a fat metal top on the table. It leaned, but it didn't fall. Instead the whole tilted top began to swing itself slowly around in a circle, like a clock hand.

"That's wrong," Soren said.

"How is it wrong. It's doing it."

"I mean it should just fall over. It's leaning. Leaning things fall." He crouched to be level with it. "It's falling sideways. In a circle. That's not falling, that's, I don't know a word for that."

"Do it again," Maya said, which was what she always said when something didn't fit yet.

He spun it. Same thing. The top tipped, then walked its lean around in a lazy circle, refusing the floor.

"Okay," Soren said slowly. "When it's not spinning and you push the top, it goes the way you pushed. When it is spinning and gravity pushes it down, it goes sideways instead. The push turns a corner."

"Gravity's still pulling it down," Maya said. "It just answers in the wrong direction."

"Not wrong. Ninety degrees off. Every time." He picked up the brass gyroscope, the DO NOT DROP one, and pulled its string. It hummed up to speed inside its gimbal ring. He balanced one end of its axle on his finger.

The gyroscope hung out sideways into the air. It should have flopped down onto his hand. It didn't. It swung around his fingertip in a slow, patient circle, the whole wheel held up by nothing but its own spinning.

"Soren." Maya put her hand under it, not touching. "It's standing on air."

"It's not standing. It's constantly falling and turning the fall into a circle so fast it never gets anywhere." He was grinning now, the way he did when the mechanism showed itself. "The faster it spins the harder it argues."

Maya went quiet. Then she said, "I've felt this."

"Felt what?"

"Riding no-hands. My bike. If I'm going fast it won't tip. I start to lean and it just, curves. And stays up. I always thought I was doing something. I wasn't." She looked at the gyroscope on his finger. "The wheels are these. They're two of these."

Soren stopped grinning because that was bigger than the top. "Say that again."

"A bike wheel is a spinning wheel. It's a gyroscope. When I lean, the lean turns a corner, same as the top, and the bike steers itself back under me." She spun the fat top again just to watch it refuse the floor. "That's why you can't balance a bike standing still and you can balance it going fast. It was never me. It was this the whole time."

"That's why a coin rolls and a coin standing up falls," Soren said. "Same coin."

They sat with that for a second in the empty gym.

"How far does it go," Maya said.

"How far does what go."

"This. The refusing-to-fall. The lean-turns-a-corner thing. Bikes. What else is a wheel that stays pointed."

Soren set the gyroscope down carefully in its ring and let it keep spinning. He reached for his notebook and drew the little circle-arrow of the top's walk, then wrote a short list down the side of the page.

"Spacecraft," he said, still writing. "I read this. They put spinning wheels inside satellites. No engine, no fuel, just wheels. You spin a wheel up one way, the whole spacecraft turns the other way. That's how they aim."

"Aim at what."

"Anything. Stars. Earth." He looked up. "The Hubble telescope. It's out there taking pictures of galaxies so far away the light left before there were people. And the reason the picture isn't a blur is wheels. Spinning wheels inside it, holding it perfectly still, pointed at one spot for hours. This." He tapped the humming gyroscope. "This is why the deep pictures aren't smeared."

Maya put both hands flat on the table because her fingers wanted something to do.

"So the same thing that keeps my bike up when I go no-hands," she said, "is what's holding a telescope steady enough to photograph the beginning of everything."

"Same thing."

"That's not a coincidence, is it. That's just, it's one rule. It's one rule and it doesn't care how big."

"There's more," Soren said, and now he said it carefully, because he wasn't sure and he never faked being sure. "The MRI. The machine at the hospital, the one my aunt went in. I don't fully get it. But I read that inside you there are, like, tiny spinning things. Little bits of atoms. And they spin, and when you put them in a big magnet they wobble. They walk in a circle. Precession. Same word as the top."

Maya turned and stared at him.

"The tops," she said. "The walking-in-a-circle. That's happening inside me right now."

"Inside everybody. All the time. The machine just listens to the wobble and turns it into a picture of the inside of you."

"So they take a picture of my knee," Maya said slowly, "using the exact same wobble that this top is doing on the table. The exact same one that holds up Hubble. The exact same one that holds up my bike."

"Far as I can tell," Soren said. "One rule. Coin, bike, satellite, telescope, the atoms in your hand."

Maya looked down at her own open hand on the table. She didn't say anything for a while. Somewhere in there, she knew, in every bit of every finger, uncountable tiny things were spinning and leaning and turning their fall into slow, patient circles, the same slow circle the brass wheel was making right now beside her.

"Spin it again," she said quietly.

Soren pulled the string. The gyroscope came up to speed and he balanced it back out on one fingertip, where it hung in the air and would not fall, and began, once more, to walk its bright slow circle around nothing.
