The lab was cold in a way that got into your teeth. Priya, the graduate student, had propped the door open with a mop bucket and was hauling cables into a box, muttering about a grant deadline and a pump that had died at the worst possible hour.
"Don't touch the silver thing," she said, without looking. "That's the cryostat. Everything else is fair game."
The silver thing was a fat metal cylinder with a glass window in its side, frosted at the edges. Inside the window was a small cup, and inside the cup was a puddle of liquid so clear it barely looked like it was there.
Maya leaned close to the glass. Soren stood beside her with his hands in his pockets because Priya had said not to touch, and he was the kind of person who honored that.
"It's boiling," Maya said.
The liquid was shivering, tiny bubbles racing up through it, the whole surface trembling like a pot on a stove. But the cylinder was so cold that frost grew on the outside. Cold and boiling at the same time.
"Helium," Priya said, taping a box shut. "Liquid helium. We were cooling it down before the pump quit. It boils at four degrees above absolute zero, so yeah. Cold to us. Warm to it."
"Warm to it," Maya repeated, like she was tasting the phrase.
Soren watched the bubbles. They came fast, then faster, a furious little storm in the cup. Then, all at once, they stopped.
The surface went flat. Perfectly, impossibly flat. Not a single bubble.
"Priya," he said. "It stopped boiling."
"That's not possible, the pump is dead." She came over anyway, frowning, and looked through the window. Her face changed. "Oh. Oh, the residual vacuum must have pulled it under. It went through the lambda point." She said it quietly, the way you say something you have read about many more times than you have seen. "Okay. Okay, that's actually kind of a big deal. It's superfluid now."
"What's superfluid," Soren asked.
"It means the friction is gone. All of it. Zero." She shook her head. "I need to get the camera, this never happens when you want it to." She hurried toward the far bench.
Maya did not move from the glass. She was watching the flat surface, and then she was watching the wall of the little cup above the surface, where the liquid was not.
Except.
"Soren. The cup. Look at the sides."
He looked. The inside wall of the cup, above the flat liquid, had a sheen to it. A wetness, climbing. Not splashing, not poured. A film so thin it was almost only a shine, creeping up the vertical wall the way frost creeps across a window, except this was moving, and moving upward, against everything.
"It's going up," Soren said. His voice was very even. "The liquid is going up the wall."
"Up and over," Maya said.
The film reached the rim of the little inner cup. And then, at the rim, drops began to gather on the outside, underneath, hanging. One let go and fell to the floor of the cup below. Then another. The liquid was climbing out of its own container, over the top, and dripping back down the far side. Emptying itself. Escaping.
"That's not a leak," Soren said. "A leak goes down. This is going up first."
Maya had both hands flat on the frozen metal now, not caring that it burned cold. "Nothing's pushing it. There's no pump. There's no straw. It's just. Deciding to leave."
"Things don't climb walls," Soren said. He wasn't arguing. He was stating the rule so he could watch it break.
Priya came back with the camera and saw their faces before she saw the cup. Then she saw the cup, and she stopped talking about the grant.
"The Rollin film," she breathed. "It's real. I mean, of course it's real, but." She laughed, a little shakily. "You know why water can't do that? Water sticks to walls too, it climbs a tiny bit, you've seen it at the edge of a glass. But water has friction. It climbs a hair and stops, because dragging itself costs energy. This costs nothing. Zero friction. So the tiniest climb never stops. It just keeps going."
Soren was still watching the drops fall off the rim. "So any cup you put it in."
"It leaves," Priya said. "You cannot build a container it won't crawl out of. There is no lid. If there's a gap, the film finds it. It'll climb out of an open jar and pool on the table."
Maya said, slowly, "So how do you ever keep it?"
"You seal it completely. Or you keep it warm enough that it stays ordinary." Priya crouched to their level, watching with them now. "Down here, near absolute zero, matter stops behaving like matter. All the helium atoms drop into one single state. They stop being a crowd. They start being one thing. And one thing doesn't have friction with itself."
One thing. Maya turned that over. The furious bubbling crowd had gone silent and flat and then it had become something that could walk up a wall as one smooth breath.
Soren pulled his notebook out of his coat pocket. He drew the cup. He drew the thin shining line going up the inside, over the rim, down the outside. He wrote a number next to it. Zero. He underlined it once, then looked at it and did not underline it again, because you cannot make zero smaller.
"There's a whole way for things to be," he said, mostly to himself, "that only happens where it's cold enough. And we don't live where it's cold enough."
"It lives there," Maya said. "That's just its normal."
Priya lifted the camera but did not press the button yet. The three of them stood in the cold with their teeth aching, watching.
One more drop swelled at the rim of the little cup, hung, and let go. The surface below took it without a sound, still perfectly flat, and the shining film kept climbing where there was nothing left to hold it back.
