Soren had brought three things to recess: a paper notebook, a wooden ruler, and a small heavy ball his uncle had mailed him with no explanation except a sticky note that said try dropping it.
"That is a boring gift," Maya said. She was crouched over her marble ramp, adjusting the angle. Rain hammered the high gym windows. "A ball. You already have a ball."
"Not like this one." Soren held it up. It was dull silver, about the size of a large marble, and it felt wrong in the hand, too dense for its size. "Feel it."
Maya took it and immediately dropped it. Not on purpose. It slid out of her fingers like it wanted to.
It hit the tile.
Then it hit the tile again. And again. And again.
They both went quiet.
"Okay," Maya said slowly, watching it. "That's not right."
A normal ball bounces a few times, each bounce lower, and then it settles. This one bounced, and the bounces went down so gently that Maya lost count. It was still going after her marble would have stopped. It made a high clean sound each time, like a tiny bell, ting, ting, ting, closer and closer together, and it did not want to stop.
Soren was already writing. His pencil moved fast.
"Do it again," Maya said. "Same height. I want to count."
They dropped it from the height of the ruler. Maya counted seventeen bounces before it got too small to see. Soren dropped his own steel ball bearing from the same height, the one from his bike kit.
The bearing bounced four times and quit.
"Four," Soren said. "Yours does seventeen."
"It's not mine, it's yours." Maya picked up the silver ball again and turned it in the gym light. "Where does the bounce go? In a normal ball. When it stops."
"Into the ball. Sort of." Soren tapped the steel bearing. "When this squishes on the floor, it heats up a little. Bends a little. It doesn't spring all the way back. The bounce leaks out as heat and shape."
"So a ball stops bouncing because it keeps a little of every hit."
"Yeah. Every bounce it keeps some."
Maya looked at the silver ball. "Then this one isn't keeping any."
They tried to break the guess. That was the good part. That was the part where you find out if you're right or just excited.
Soren rolled the steel bearing across the tile and pressed his thumbnail into a scrap of solder from the bike kit. The solder held the dent. Soft. Then he pressed his nail against the silver ball as hard as he could.
"Nothing," he said. "No mark."
"Metal dents," Maya said. "Every metal I've ever touched dents. Spoons dent. My bike dents."
"This is metal. It's heavy like metal, it's cold like metal, it rings like metal." Soren rolled it in his palm. "But it acts like glass. Glass doesn't dent. Glass springs back or it shatters."
Maya went still with the ball cupped in both hands. Then she said, "Say that part again."
"Which part."
"Glass and metal. Why can't a thing be both."
Soren thought about the fridge magnets his teacher used to explain metal once, the neat little rows, atoms stacked like oranges at the market, tidy lines in every direction. "Metal atoms line up in rows," he said. "That's why they dent. The rows can slide. You push and a whole row slips over and it stays slipped. That's a dent."
"And glass?"
"Glass atoms are a mess. Frozen mid-tumble. No rows. Nothing to slide." He stopped. He looked at the ball. "So a metal with no rows."
"A metal that froze before it could line up," Maya said.
"You can't do that. Metal always lines up. When it cools it snaps into rows, it wants to."
"Unless you cool it so fast it doesn't get the chance." Maya was talking faster now. "Like when you freeze the good ice cream fast so it doesn't go crunchy. Fast means messy. Slow means crystals."
Soren stared at her. Then he wrote metal frozen so fast it stays a liquid shape and underlined it twice.
"But that's a thin thing, right?" he said. "Freezing fast, you can only do that to something tiny. A wire. A skin. Not a whole ball. The middle would cool slow and line up." He weighed the ball. "This is thick. The whole middle should be rows."
"Drop it again," Maya said.
Ting, ting, ting. Fourteen bounces this time. Not one dead thud among them.
"The middle bounces too," Maya said. "If the middle had rows, the middle would eat the bounce. It doesn't. It's messy all the way through."
Soren sat back against the bike rack. "All the way through," he repeated. "A liquid's insides, standing still, big enough to hold."
That was the moment the gym got bigger. Maya felt it the way you feel a floor you thought was solid turn out to be a bridge over something. Every metal thing she had ever dented. Her handlebars. Her fork against a plate. All of them full of tidy little rows that slid and gave up the bounce as warmth. And here, in her hand, was one that had cheated. One that had been caught in the middle of being liquid and told to stay there, and it had stayed, and now it gave everything back.
"That's why your uncle didn't explain," Maya said. "You can't explain it. You have to hear it not stop."
Soren nodded. He was still writing.
"People make things out of this," Maya said. "They have to. A thing that gives back every push. You could hit a golf ball forever with it. You could make it so a knife never bends. You could drop your whole phone and it would hand you back the bounce instead of cracking."
"Somebody figured out how to freeze the middle," Soren said quietly. "Somebody figured out how to do it thick."
Maya lifted the ball over the tile and let it go one more time, and they both leaned in and stopped talking, and the little silver bell counted itself down toward a quiet it was in no hurry to reach.
