The Frequency of Everything

One small motor rolls a whole bridge like water. The same trick photographs inside a sleeping woman.

The sign on the footbridge said CLOSED, but nobody had told the engineer testing it, so Maya and Soren stood at the near end and watched.

The engineer was a tired woman named Priya who kept checking her phone. She had a machine bolted to the middle of the bridge, a small motor with a weight that spun in a circle.

"What's it doing?" Soren asked.

"Shaking it," Priya said. "Slowly at first. We speed it up and find out where it wants to shake."

"Where it wants to," Maya repeated.

"Everything has a speed it likes," Priya said, not really looking at them. "You'll see. Stay off the deck."

The motor hummed low. Nothing happened. The bridge sat there, gray and rusting, doing nothing anyone could see.

Then the hum climbed higher, and Maya put her hand on the railing at the end.

"Feel that," she said.

Soren put his hand next to hers. A faint buzz, no more than a fly against a window.

Priya turned a dial. The hum climbed again. And then, with no warning, the whole middle of the bridge lifted and dropped, lifted and dropped, a slow heavy wave, the deck rolling like water even though the motor's little weight was smaller than a soccer ball.

"Whoa," Soren said. He stepped back off the railing. "That's too much. That's way too much for that little motor."

"That's the one," Priya said and wrote a number down. "That's its frequency. Push it at that exact speed and the pushes add up."

Maya was watching the wave. "Add up how?"

"Same as a swing," Priya said. "You don't shove a kid on a swing hard. You give little pushes at the right moment. Tiny push, tiny push, and she goes to the sky."

The motor's weight was tiny. The bridge was enormous. But the bridge was swinging to the sky.

Priya turned the dial down and the wave died away to nothing, the deck flat and gray again, as if it had never moved.

"So a wrong-speed push does nothing," Soren said slowly, "and a right-speed push does that."

"That's why we test," said Priya. "Wind at the wrong speed, a truck at the wrong speed, nothing. Wind that happens to match, and towers sway, bridges break. There's a famous one. Soldiers used to break step marching over bridges so their feet wouldn't all hit the beat."

"Their feet," Maya said. "The same push over and over."

"Now you've got it," Priya said, and looked at her phone again.

Maya went quiet, her hand still on the buzzing rail. Then she said, "A voice can do it too."

Soren looked at her.

"The glass," she said. "The singing glass. Somebody sings one note and the wine glass cracks. Mom showed us a video. Everyone thinks it's the loudness. It's not the loudness. It's the note."

"It's the note," Soren agreed, and something in his face changed. "The right note is the right speed of push. For the glass. The glass has a speed it likes, same as the bridge."

"Everything does," Maya said. "She just said everything does."

Priya wasn't listening anymore. She was rolling up a cable.

Soren pulled out his notebook and wrote, standing, the page tilting on his knee. He drew a swing. He drew a glass. He drew the little motor and a big arrow off the bridge.

"Okay," he said. "Bridge has a speed. Glass has a speed. Building has a speed. What doesn't?"

"Nothing doesn't," Maya said. "That's the point. If everything's made of stuff, and stuff can shake, then everything has a note."

"Us?" Soren said.

They both stopped.

"Us," Maya said.

The river went under the bridge. A gull sat on the far railing where the wave had been.

"That can't be right," Soren said, but he was writing it down anyway. "If people had a note you could sing at, and it added up, people would just, what, fall apart at concerts."

"Not a note you can sing," Maya said. She was frowning, chasing it. "The glass note is high. Higher than the bridge's slow wave. Little glass, fast note. Big bridge, slow wave. Small thing, fast. Big thing, slow."

"So a person," Soren said.

"Would have a whole pile of notes. Every bit of you. Every bit made of something different." Maya's hands were moving now. "Water in you and bone in you and fat in you, and they're all different, so they'd all like different speeds."

Soren stopped writing.

"Say that again," he said.

"Different stuff, different speed," Maya said. "So if you had a machine that could push at every speed, one at a time, the water would answer at the water speed and the bone would answer at the bone speed, and you'd know which was which. Without cutting anyone. You'd just, you'd listen to what answered."

Soren's mouth opened. He looked at the little motor on the bridge. He looked at Maya.

"That's a scan," he said. "That's an actual scan. My gran had one. The huge tube. It bangs. It's the loudest thing, it sounds like a hammer, and they put you in and it makes a picture of the inside of you and nobody touches you."

"The banging is the pushing," Maya said.

"The banging is the pushing," Soren said. "It's finding the note of every part of her. It's the wine glass, it's the bridge, it's the swing, it's, it's the same thing, it's the same exact thing that breaks the bridge and it's looking inside my gran without opening her up."

He stood there holding the notebook against his chest.

"The thing that destroys stuff," he said, quieter. "We turned it into the thing that finds tumors."

Maya wasn't looking at him. She had crouched down and put her palm flat on the deck of the closed bridge, past the sign, where she wasn't supposed to be, and Priya had turned the dial back up without noticing them, and the slow wave was starting again.

"Soren," she said. "Come feel what my hand's doing."

He crouched next to her. Under their palms the whole enormous bridge was rising and falling, a wave built out of one small motor's patient, tiny, perfectly timed pushes, and somewhere across town a machine was making the same wave inside a sleeping woman and turning it into light.
