The whole building had emptied out by noon. Snow does that. Maya's mother had a lab on the third floor and had told them to stay put, stay warm, and touch nothing, in that order, and then vanished into a meeting that had somehow still not been canceled.
"Touch nothing is easy," Maya said. "There's nothing to touch."
But there was a screen. On a bench in the dim room, a monitor was still awake, showing a green line that climbed slowly, like something breathing in.
Soren leaned close and read the little label taped under it. "Excited state population. Whatever that means."
"It means something's getting ready to fall," Maya said. She watched the line rise. "See? It builds up, then it drops. It's about to drop."
The line reached the top. And dropped. A soft chime came from the speaker, once.
"There," she said. "It fell."
Soren was already reading the rest of the note. There was a laminated card clipped to the bench, the kind grown-ups leave for their students. He read it out loud, slowly, the way he read everything that mattered.
"It says the atoms sit in a high state and decay to a low state, randomly, on their own. And it says there's a laser that can check which state they're in. A probe pulse. And then there's a line somebody underlined twice." He stopped.
"What line."
"'The more often we look, the longer they stay up.'"
Maya turned from the screen. "That's backwards."
"I know."
"If you keep checking on something, it should just do its thing. Checking doesn't change anything. If I keep opening the freezer, the ice cream doesn't freeze harder."
"The card says it does," Soren said. "For atoms."
There was a dial on the bench with a paper arrow drawn beside it, and a word: PROBE RATE. Below that, a range from SLOW to FAST. It was set near the middle.
Maya put her finger near it, not on it. "She said touch nothing."
"She said touch nothing so we wouldn't break anything," Soren said. "This is a dial with a whole range printed on it. Turning a dial to a place it's allowed to go isn't breaking it." He paused. "But you should be the one to say we do it."
"Why me."
"Because you already think it's wrong. If it's wrong, you'll want to know why. I'll just want to know if."
Maya turned the dial to SLOW.
On the screen, the green line climbed, reached the top, and fell. Chime. It climbed again, fell again. The falls came fairly often, at their own lazy pace.
"Okay," she said. "That's normal. It rises, it falls, whenever it feels like it."
Soren was watching the little indicator that flashed each time the probe pulse fired. At SLOW, it blinked rarely. "The laser's barely checking," he said. "Look how seldom it flashes."
"Turn it up, then. FAST. Let's make it check like crazy."
"You turn it. I want to watch your face."
Maya rolled her eyes and turned the dial all the way to FAST.
The probe indicator went from a slow blink to a blur, flickering so fast it looked like a steady light. And the green line, the one that had been rising and falling, rising and falling, stopped rising.
It sat down low and stayed there.
No chime. No fall. Nothing.
Maya waited. Soren counted under his breath, all the way to sixty, then to a hundred.
"It's stuck," he said.
"It's not stuck. Stuck is broken. This isn't broken." She stared at the flat green line. "It just isn't falling."
"Because we're looking too hard," Soren said. He said it carefully, like he was setting a cup on the edge of a table. "The atom wants to fall. And every time it starts, the laser checks, and it finds it still up, and starting over doesn't count, and so it never gets to finish."
"That's not a real reason. That's just what happened, said slower."
"I know. But I don't think there's a because-of underneath it. I think the looking is the reason. The card's not describing something the laser does to the atom by accident. The looking is the whole thing."
Maya turned the dial back to SLOW. Almost at once, the line climbed, reached the top, and fell. Chime.
FAST. The line flattened and froze.
SLOW. It breathed again, up and down.
She did it four more times. The atom fell when they let it be, and refused to fall when they stared. Not sometimes. Every time.
"It knows," she said quietly.
"It doesn't know," Soren said. "That's the part that's making my neck feel weird. There's no eyes on it. There's nobody home in there deciding to behave. It's just, checking whether it fell is enough to stop it from falling. The question freezes the answer."
Maya sat down on the cold floor with her back against the bench. "I do that."
"Do what?"
"When I'm falling asleep. If I check whether I'm asleep yet, I'm awake again. Every time I look, I'm up."
Soren stopped, with his pen already out. He looked at her for a second. Then he crouched and wrote it down, the sleep thing, right under where he'd copied the underlined line.
"So it's not just weird atom stuff," Maya said. "It's a real rule. Watching a thing closely enough can keep it from changing."
"Only for quantum things," Soren said. "The card's careful about that. Ice cream doesn't count. You don't count. But the atom counts, and the atom's real, and it's sitting right there doing it."
Maya looked up at the frozen green line, then at the probe indicator blurring away, checking, checking, checking, never letting the atom finish the smallest fall.
"Turn it to slow before she comes back," she said. "I don't want to be the reason an atom never got to fall."
Soren reached for the dial. Then he stopped, his hand hovering over it, not touching yet.
"What," Maya said.
"The whole time it was frozen," he said, "the whole time we were staring, we were the ones holding it up. It couldn't fall because of us."
He turned the dial to SLOW. The green line climbed, and reached the top, and the chime rang out once into the empty snowed-in building, and neither of them was watching the atom at the exact moment it finally fell.
